What it is

Platen is an open-source Android app that prints over Wi-Fi (IPP) and USB (IPP and PJL) to printers that speak open protocols, with the print settings you know from a PC. It has no ads, no accounts and no telemetry. It is pre-alpha (v0.1.3) and licensed under Apache-2.0.

Under the hood

  • Prints to non-proprietary printers over Wi-Fi (IPP) and USB (IPP, PJL), with PC-style settings such as copies, colour and two-sided.

  • No ads, no accounts, no telemetry: documents go from the phone to the printer and nowhere else.

  • The IPP codec and the PJL parser are covered by tests and fuzzing.

  • A multi-module Gradle project, with written architecture decision records (ADRs) for the big choices.

Screens

The Platen home screen lists the saved printer, with buttons to add a printer and print a document.
The print screen shows a page preview, copies, colour mode and two-sided options.
